  今回、上海への出張と短い観光を兼ねて、かつての老舗「東亜飯店（East Asia Hotel）」であるこのホテルをあえて選びましたJinjiang Inn Select (Shanghai Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street)。都心の一等地に位置するチェーンホテルは立地重視で、サービスは「可もなく不可もなく」といった程度だろうと思っていましたが、実際に滞在してみると、そのきめ細やかなサービスに心を打たれ、この種のホテルに対する私の印象が完全に覆されました。
  上海に到着したのは深夜1時過ぎでした。スーツケースを引いてホテルの入り口に近づくと、深夜のチェックインで待たされるだろうと思っていた予想に反し、入り口のスタッフが遠くから出迎えてくれ、重いスーツケースを快く受け取ってフロントまで運んでくれました。チェックインの際、フロントの女性スタッフが私の疲れた顔色に気づき、こちらから頼む前に温かい白湯を出してくれました。さらに、夜の歩行者天国は一部薄暗い場所があるため、部屋に戻る際​​は足元に気をつけるよう優しく声をかけてくれました。ほんの数分のチェックイン手続きでしたが、深夜の移動の疲れが一瞬で吹き飛ぶような体験でした。

  ホテルの付帯サービスにも、随所に心遣いが感じられました。コインランドリーで洗濯物を入れて用事を済ませて戻ってきたときのことです。乾燥が終わった衣類がきれいに畳まれてバスケットに入れられていただけでなく、梅雨の時期は衣類が湿気を吸いやすいため、フロントで無料の防塵袋をいつでも提供しているというメッセージまで添えられていました。仕事で使っていたマウスが急に故障してしまい、ダメ元でフロントに予備がないか尋ねたところ、スタッフはすぐに使えるマウスを用意してくれただけでなく、携帯用のマウスパッドまでいくつか提供してくれました。おかげで、夜の業務計画の整理作業に支障をきたすことは全くありませんでした。
